Rising from Hurricane Michael’s Aftermath

Background: 2018 marked one of the most devastating years as Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 storm, wreaked havoc. Drawing parallels with the challenges faced during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the task at hand was monumental.

Action:

  • In partnership with Feeding America, I ventured into the hardest-hit areas, equipped with the knowledge and experience from past endeavors.
  • Our team’s approach was multi-faceted: ensuring a continuous supply of food, water, and essentials, identifying operational partner agencies amid the chaos, and locating a sustainable facility for Feeding The Gulf Coast Food Bank’s long-term storage needs in the ravaged region. I also confirmed any potential sites that could serve as temporary distribution hubs.

Results:

  • The tangible relief efforts went hand-in-hand with witnessing the resilience and unity of communities. Amid the ruins, the persistence to find a functional facility and the drive to locate distribution hubs illuminated our mission. Every day, amidst the vast devastation, the indomitable strength of communities coming together shone through, exemplifying the triumph of the human spirit over calamity.

Elevating Support with Crossroads Community Services

Crossroads was the largest provider of food of the North Texas Food Bank at 11 million pounds each month.

Background: Crossroads Community Services stood as a beacon of hope in Dallas County, catering to numerous residents, from the most vulnerable to the homeless.

Action:

  • As Director of Operations, I was responsible for managing the sprawling 8,000 sq. ft. facility. This encompassed a broad range of responsibilities from adhering to OSHA regulations, and maintaining IT systems, to ensuring the logistics of incoming and outgoing food resources.
  • Under my stewardship, Crossroads achieved a significant milestone: it became the North Texas Food Bank’s most substantial food provider. Our operations were vast and intricate – distributing over 11 million pounds of food every month to 152 community distribution points and directly supporting 26,000 low-income clients and an additional 400 homeless individuals.

Results:

  • The journey with Crossroads was more than just about numbers. While we reached monumental milestones in terms of food distribution, the real success lay in the impact we had on individual lives in Dallas County. Working alongside a dedicated team, our singular focus was to serve, uplift, and transform lives. This chapter in my nonprofit journey stands as a heartfelt tribute to collaborative service.

Championing Hope Amidst a Pandemic

During 2020 at the height of the pandemic I was on the frontlines serving thousands of families struggling to feed their families.

Background: The year 2020 will forever be etched in history due to the global pandemic. As the world grappled with uncertainties, food insecurities surged in Southwest Texas, highlighting a pressing need for immediate action.

Action:

  • Positioned at the forefront, I was entrusted with the mammoth task of orchestrating 5 dynamic teams, each with its own set of challenges and responsibilities, all united under the goal of serving those in dire need.
  • My purview stretched from managing the Compliance & Capacity team, which meticulously inspected over 500 nonprofits, to helming the Distribution crew. Our signature MEGA distributions became a lifeline for up to 2,000 families at a time.
  • The sheer scale of the operation demanded unwavering dedication. With days often exceeding 12 hours, it was a test of endurance, resolve, and unity. Yet, the undying spirit of every staff member and volunteer transformed these challenges into success stories.

Results:

  • While the journey was daunting, the outcomes were profoundly rewarding. In a time of global distress, we managed to light up countless lives, ensuring that families had food on their tables. The experience reiterated the power of community, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to a cause.

Transforming a Desert into a Haven: North Texas Food Bank’s Impact in South Dallas

Background: In a South Dallas area marked by food scarcity, an old liquor store found a renewed purpose. Through a strategic partnership between the North Texas Food Bank and St. Philip’s School and Community Center, the building transformed into Our Community Pantry — a beacon of hope for local residents.

Action:

  • Brad Wendling, with his title as the community outreach senior manager, was instrumental in modeling the South Dallas grocery store after successful pantries nationwide.
  • The facility, which sprawls over 3,000-square-feet, offers a grocery store experience, giving clients the autonomy to select their essentials.
  • The pantry not only alleviates immediate hunger but also focuses on promoting healthier eating habits. Brad noticed that whole-wheat pasta was less popular and sought to address it, possibly through nutrition education.

Results:

  • Offering more than just food, the pantry became a hub for community engagement, health screenings, and potential collaborations for holistic community betterment.
  • Their innovative approach served over 650 families in just one month, demonstrating a sharp increase from the previous system.
  • The new approach embodied the principle of dignified service, providing clients not just with food, but with choices and respect.
